Sanjoy Sen Memorial Lecture
In memory of our beloved President Late Sanjoy Sen, who was in the same position for several decades, we organize ‘Sanjoy Sen Memorial Lecture’ on his birthday 14th January every year since 2003.
Biography of Sanjoy Sen
Late Sanjoy Sen was born on 14th January 1926. He did his Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from USA.
After qualifying from America, he built the National Tannery Co. Ltd., founded by his grand father Sir Nil Ratan Sarkar, to become the largest tannery in India, as well as one of the largest exporters in India in those pioneering days for exports. Mr. Sen was acknowledged as an authority on the Leather & Leather Manufacturers industry with special reference to exports. Mr Sen had also been the Chairman of the Export Promotion Council for Finished Leather & Leather Manufacturers, Kanpur for well over a decade, the organization now being known as the Council for Leather Exports. Mr Sen was also the Past Chairman of the Leather Development Council set up by the Ministry of Industry, Government of India.
Mr. Sen was the President of the Indian Leather Technologists’ Association and Chairman of the Governing Body of the College of Leather Technology. Mr Sen was the Chairman of the Research Council of the Central Leather Research Institute in Chennai. He was the President of the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies Geneva in 1999. He was the Chairman of the Third Consultation Committee of Leather & Leather Products Industry – UNIDO in 1984 and had acted as an Expert and Consultant for Leather & Leather Products for UNIDO – Vienna on numerous occasions, and was a member of UNIDO’s Leather Industry Panel.
He had equally intimate connection with engineering industry: pioneered the export of bicycles from India to a number of countries of Africa. Middle East and South East Asia ; was President of Indian Engineering Association – now known as the confederation of Indian Industry ; was the Chairman of Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search for about 25 years.
In the course of his extraordinary and versatile career, as an entrepreneur, industrialist and technocrat, Mr Sen was recognized both by the Government and Industry as an authority on export promotion. His talents and wide experience and knowledge of exports had led to his appointments to the Boards of The Export Credit & Guarantee Corporation. The Trade Development Authority, India Tourism Development Corporation, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Indian Standards Institution, Chairman – ISO, Geneva and the Federation of Indian Export Organizations.
He passed away on 31st August, 2001.
